Named after Joseph Shatzmiller, an eminent Duke University Jewish historian and a longtime member of the seminar, these fellowships offer an opportunity to learn more about a range of Jewish Studies topics, meet and engage with prominent Jewish Studies scholars from across the country and the world, and receive mentorship from NC Jewish Studies scholars. Fellows will receive a research stipend of $750 and an opportunity to present their work to an interdisciplinary audience of international scholars. Up to four fellowships will be offered.linebreaklinebreakThe seminar meets about once a month during the academic year, on Sunday afternoons. This year, we anticipate that meetings will take place at Duke, with some meetings possibly at UNC-CH. Sessions feature in-person guests, and are usually hybrid, with members unable to attend in-person joining on Zoom. Shatzmiller Fellows are expected to attend in-person. Papers are pre-circulated. Fellows will be encouraged to participate in intellectual exchange and will be invited to at least one dinner per academic year with visiting scholars.linebreaklinebreakShatzmiller Fellows will be expected to attend sessions regularly, in person, and to share their work during the final session April 18th, 2027. Each participant will submit a paper (around 15 pages) on their current research by April 1st. The paper will be pre-circulated and students will give a 10-minute presentation before the discussion.linebreaklinebreakCompetition is open to graduate students (PhD or MA) at universities in North Carolina in or near the triangle. Preference is usually given to more advanced students, but graduation cannot be expected before May 2027. linebreaklinebreakApplication requirements: CV, writing sample (8,000 words maximum), and a 1-2-page statement of interest, specifically discussing your interest in Jewish Studies. Please email these materials (or any questions) to saskia.ziolkowski@duke.edu by July 31st, 2026. linebreak
