Gabriel Danzig <Gabriel.Danzig@biu.ac.il> forwarded this sad news:linebreak==========================linebreaklinebreakIt is with great sadness that I announce the death of Professor James Redfield of the University of Chicago.linebreaklinebreakJamie was an inspirational teacher, a brilliant reader and thinker, and a passionate lover of all things Greek. His landmark book Nature and Culture in the Iliad was among the first works to bring anthropological theory to the study of Homeric poetry. He went on to write a series of articles that became classics in their own right, including "The Women of Sparta," "The Economic Man," "Herodotus the Tourist," "The Proem of the Iliad: Homer's Art," and "Notes on the Greek Wedding," among many others. He also wrote a brilliant article on Homer's Briseis for Script Israelica.linebreaklinebreakHe was especially proud of his final book, The Locrian Maidens, a wide-ranging exploration of the mythological and religious world of Western Greece. As one reviewer aptly observed, it is "a very ambitious, at times masterful, and wide-ranging volume that defies expectations for books that treat a particular site or region."linebreaklinebreakIn his later years, Jamie returned to his early interest in philosophy. He participated in a conference on Plato and Xenophon, published articles on both, and took part in a research group on Socrates at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies, where he brought the same intellectual curiosity and generosity that had characterized his work throughout his career.linebreaklinebreakHe is survived by his son, James Adam Redfield [<redfieldja@slu.edu>], a scholar of Jewish civilization affiliated with Saint Louis University and the University of Chicago.linebreaklinebreakJames Redfield's scholarship had great influence on the study of the ancient world, but those who knew him will remember not only his learning, originality, and breadth of vision, but also his warmth, enthusiasm, and love of conversation.linebreaklinebreak[A brief wiki notice is at <https://tinyurl.com/3jzz2cax>]linebreak[Webpage at <https://socialthought.uchicago.edu/directory/James-M-Redfield>]linebreaklinebreak--- linebreak
